Keeping Warm While Using Less Energy

When the temperatures dip, it can be a challenge to keep your house warm. But bumping up the thermostat will also bump up your energy usage and in turn, your electric bill. Before kicking on the furnace though, there are some simple ways to improve your home’s ability to retain heat and feel cozy.

Long-Term Solutions

Did you know that if we added up all the cracks and gaps in the average US home, we would have a 3×3 foot hole in the wall? Experts tell us windows that aren’t tightly sealed or caulked, gaps around ductwork, or loose-fitting exterior doors can contribute to the 3×3 foot hole in the wall.

It can be challenging to find all these small holes. Homeowners can start with the obvious culprits (anywhere they feel a draft or chill in the house) and then they may want to consider getting an energy audit. For Indiana residents there are several free options through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and AES Indiana.

Short-Term

While it might take some time to caulk, tape, mud, and seal, there are some quick fixes to fight the draft.

  • Curtains drawn over drafty windows at night can prevent 10% of a room’s heat loss – thermal-insulated curtains can retain more. Leave them open during the day to let sunlight in to warm your house.
  • Draft stoppers or weather strips can be used at the base of exterior doors to help keep the cold out.
  • Ceiling fans set to turn clockwise can push warm air down into the room.
  • Warm socks, sweaters, scarves, and blankets will help you stay warm.
  • Internal doors should be closed and the heat vents in those rooms blocked off to avoid heating parts of the house that aren’t utilized.
  • Oven doors can be left cracked open after baking to help you take advantage of the residual heat *Note – It may be wise to block off access to the kitchen if you have pets or children running around the house when the hot oven door is open.

Small simple things can make a huge difference in the sustainability of your home, whether it is filling those cracks that add up to the 3×3 foot hole in the wall or pulling out some warm woolen socks to warm up your cold feet. As the cold weather continues for a couple more months, we hope these tips will help you stay warm, fight the chill, and keep your energy usage low.
